Magdalen chapel of Bargello

The Magdalen Chapel, also known as the Cappella del Podestà, is lit by two lancet windows on the north wall and a central window on the east wall. The painted decoration on its walls consists of a cycle of frescos, commissioned in 1322 by Francesco da Barberino.

Although the frescos are in poor condition, the visual program is still clear. An image of Hell occupies the entrance wall, a scene of Paradise has been painted opposite this, on the east wall, and scenes from the lives of John the Baptist and Mary Magdalen feature on the lateral walls.
